Is Paradise Point Losing Its Charm? The Alarming Increase in Crime Rates
Concern amongst locals and business owners is growing as Paradise Point crime rates skyrocket.
The Red Suburbs Paradise Point Crime Map has revealed a 20.6% increase in crime statistics over the last twelve months.
Theft and burglary are independently responsible for over one hundred of the cases reported.
Paradise Point Newsagency Owner, Rick Walsh has fallen victim to countless local crime offences from shoplifting to more serious incidents.
“In an unprovoked attack at midnight, a drug affected untoward person has smashed four glass doors, two shop front windows and our ATM with a brick,” Walsh said.
When asked how this has affected him personally, Walsh revealed that the safety of his staff was the first priority on his mind claiming, “higher visibility of Police presence would be a good start to reducing the level of crime. Higher penalties also.”
In a parting statement Walsh wished to advise local offenders that, “your choices today determine where you will be tomorrow.”
Sergeant Dean Godfrey, being a Gold Coast resident himself, has observed the uprise of local crime firsthand.
“I’m certainly seeing an increase in crime, increase in the brazen nature and seriousness of offending; and recidivism of young offenders," Godfrey said.
He comments that it is refreshing to see police resources being directed at the issue.
“I acknowledge that we can’t arrest our way out of the problem, and we need to engage other agencies to assist with programs aimed at young offenders to divert them from committing crime and incarceration.”
Godfrey recognizes that the stronger hand seen to be addressing crime is progressive and hopes that the public, particularly located in crime hot spots, will feel safer and more protected as a result.
